Employer Supported Volunteering
Employer Supported Volunteering:
As well as our nearly 500 regular museum volunteers, we also have excellent relationships with local companies who engage with Volunteering through their Corporate Social Responsibility schemes.
Employer Supported Volunteering days allow for groups of employees from local companies to take part in projects and activities within the Museum which could range from moving a collection store to site presentation, or gardening to event preparation. Environmentally sustainable practices adopted by corporate volunteers have helped the Trust gain a Gold Star Green Business Tourism Award.
Over recent years Corporate Volunteering partners have supported the Museum on a number of diverse projects such as packing, cataloguing and relocating the Trust’s historic costume collection, testing a new app that showcases the historic monuments within the World Heritage Site and creating a horticultural and composting area behind-the-scenes at Blists Hill Victorian Town. All of the companies and businesses worked with have strengthened their partnership with the Trust over the past ten years and are now working together to develop a broader range of projects and support across all ten Museum sites.
The volunteers not only get a ‘day out of the office’ but they are also taken well out of their comfort zone, doing things that are completely different to their day jobs. They meet new people-from their own company, and visitors, and get an enormous sense of satisfaction at the end of the day, when a real difference can be seen.
The groups always have fun and that’s the most important thing. They can see that they are helping the Museum, and whilst the tasks may be hard work, they are enjoyable and give the volunteers a chance to really make a difference to the Trust’s Charitable Aims.
Help for Museums:
For many museums across the UK, including Ironbridge, volunteers are a vital resource. They enable better access by providing both support and time to promote and aid the Museum. Employer Supported Volunteers are not common in Museums, but so valuable have they been to Ironbridge, that the Volunteer Department has produced a useful toolkit aimed to encourage Museums and Heritage Sites to engage their local businesses to help them achieve more. You can download the toolkit here.
If you are a business local to Ironbridge or one with local links – large or small, and would love to help out by providing Corporate Volunteers, please get in touch with the Volunteer Coordinator on 01952 601044. There is a wide variety of activities to take part in, outdoors and in, physical or office based. We can tailor your business training needs to provide a day, a week, or on-going projects. You can come for a few days over a month or once a year – it really is that flexible, and you can be assured of our full operational and administrative support throughout the project.
You can also help out by joining our Business Club, where your business will not only enjoy the status and prestige of being associated with one of the largest independent museums in the world but you will receive a range of exclusive benefits and fantastic offers. – click here for more details.
